Answer six questions and get Arizona's 76 game management units ranked by habitat fit, AZGFD hunts and public land, for elk, mule deer, Coues whitetail, pronghorn, javelina, bighorn sheep, bison, bear, mountain lion, turkey and upland birds.
This tool scores Arizona's 76 game management units on USGS land-cover and elevation data, the share of public land such as national forests, BLM land and wildlife refuges, and each unit's own hunts. AZGFD publishes harvest by hunt number on azgfd.com, which could not be downloaded for this site, so there is no harvest history in the score.
Hunts come from AZGFD's 2025–26 Arizona Hunting Regulations and 2025 Pronghorn and Elk Regulations: every drawn hunt's hunt number, units, weapon, legal animal and permits, plus over-the-counter archery deer, bear and mountain lion. The 2026–27 booklets could not be downloaded, so every date is last year's date moved forward one year and labeled. Spring turkey, javelina and bear are in AZGFD's separate spring booklet and are not shown.

Yes, with a bow. Archery-only nonpermit tags are sold over the counter for many units in August–September and December–January. Rifle and muzzleloader deer hunts are drawn.
Elk are in the Mogollon Rim and White Mountains country: Units 1, 3B, 3C, 4A, 4B, 5A, 5B, 6A, 7, 8, 9, 10, 23 and 27 have most of the elk hunts.
The GMUs with the highest average reported harvest for each species. High totals often reflect large areas and many hunters; the tool above also weighs harvest per square mile, hunter success, habitat and access.
