How the Oregon finder works
ODFW manages big game by wildlife management unit. This tool scores all 67 units for the species you pick using ODFW harvest statistics from 2021–2025 (mandatory hunter reports by unit and hunt for buck deer, elk, bear, cougar, pronghorn, bighorn sheep and mountain goat), USGS land-cover and elevation data, and the share of public land such as national forest and BLM land.
Season fit uses the 2026 Oregon Big Game Regulations: the Western Oregon general deer season, general archery, West Cascade, Coast and Rocky Mountain elk seasons, fall bear and cougar, with typical windows for controlled hunts. Birds and waterfowl are ranked by county with the 2026–27 Game Bird Regulations.

Oregon hunting FAQ
Which Oregon units are best for black-tailed deer?
The Santiam, McKenzie, Rogue and Melrose units lead ODFW's 2021–2025 western Oregon buck harvest. The Western Oregon general any-legal-weapon season runs Oct. 3–Nov. 6, 2026.
Can I hunt mule deer in eastern Oregon over the counter?
No. Eastern Oregon buck deer hunting is by controlled hunt only, and starting in 2026 hunts are drawn by Deer Hunt Area instead of unit. The tool ranks units on their past mule deer harvest.
Can I hunt bears or cougars with hounds in Oregon?
No. Oregon bans hunting bears and cougars with dogs and baiting bears. Fall bear runs Aug. 1–Dec. 31 and cougar is open all year until a zone quota is met.
